Rio 2016 fallout: Pulling Nigeria back from the brink

By on 19:21
igeria’s poor outing at the Rio Olympic Games has triggered a debate over what should be done to improve the country’s fortune in sporting events. ADEYINKA ADEDIPE takes a look at Team Nigeria’s performance in Brazil and writes that the slide will continue unless the government, corporate organisations and other stakeholders rise ways to rescue the situation.

The story of Nigeria’s failure at the 31st edition of the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil is a familiar one. Only the die-hard optimists and unrepentant patriots would have expected a different outcome considering the shoddy build-up to the Games. Those who expected a spectacular performance from Team Nigeria in Rio got it all wrong. They allowed patriotism, rather than reality, to override their sense of judgment.

For the umpteenth time, the woeful performance of Nigeria at a major championship has sparked debate over what should be done to get sports on the right track. It took the heroic effort of the Dream Team to win a bronze – the country’s only consolation medal at the games where 74 athletes took part. Apart from the Dream Team’s feat, table tennis star Aruna Quadri became the first African to play in the quarter finals of the Games, losing to the eventual winner, China’s Ma Long.
In a competition where Nigeria struggled to make a mark, countries like Fiji Island, Kosovo, Jordan, Singapore and Tajikistan won their first gold medals. Expectedly, their compatriots back home celebrated the feat of their ‘worthy’ ambassadors.
It is disheartening, as well as baffling that Nigeria has not been able to build on the record it set at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 where it won two gold medals – one from the Dream Team, led by iconic player Kanu Nwankwo and the other by Chioma Ajunwa, whose epic performance in the long jump event reverberated all over the world

The once-in-a-life-time jump endeared Ajunwa to athletics buffs and fans alike.
Since recording its best performance in Atlanta 20 years ago, it has been a free fall for Nigeria at the Olympic Games, culminating in the country’s inability to win any medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games amid great expectation.
The administrators, who presided over the London debacle, promised that efforts would be done to ensure that the country bounced from that poor outing to post a good outing in Rio. That ambitious dream may be for the future as the curtain has dropped on the Rio Olympics with Nigerian, once again, failing to shine on the world stage in Brazil.

The proverbial drawing board seems not to be working for the country as its contingents to the Olympics have continued to struggle at every edition of the games. So, what could be done to arrest the situation?  To some, the problems being faced by the country in sports is peculiar to it. They believe a close look into the British model of sports development may be helpful.

CBN licenses 11 new Int’l money transfer operators

By on 19:17
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday licensed 11 new International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs). The new entrants are joining Western Union, MoneyGram and Ria, which had been cleared by the CBN.
The new operators are Trans-Fast Remittance LLC; WorldRemit Limited, UAE Exchange Centre LLC; Wari Limited, Homesend S.C.R.L, Small World Financial Services Group Limited and Weblink International Limited. Others are Cash Pot Limited, DT&T Corporation Limited, Fiem Group LLC DBA Ping Express and CP Express Limited.
In a statement announcing the new operators, the CBN Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, said the policy shift was in furtherance of efforts to liberalise the Foreign Exchange Market, ensure liquidity and make foreign exchange more readily available to low end users.
He explained that the new operators were licensed in line with the existing guidelines on International Money Transfer Services in Nigeria (2014):The CBN also reiterated its commitment to providing an enabling environment for international money transfer services.

The CBN had earlier announced an ongoing licensing of interested IMTOs. Okorafor, dismissed allegations that the CBN had stopped licencing the IMTOs.
He explained in a statement that in spite of its transparency in the licensing IMTOs, some persons have continued to allege that the bank has stopped the exercise.
“The CBN wishes to state, unequivocally, that it has not foreclosed the licensing of interested players in the IMTO space in Nigeria. Therefore, interested applicants are required to forward their requests for licensing to the Director, Trade and Exchange Department of the CBN, in line with the CBN Guidelines on International Money Transfer Services in Nigeria (2014), which among other things, specifies the minimum technical and business requirements for various participants in the international money transfer services industry in Nigeria,” he said.
It added: “The CBN remains committed to providing an enabling environment for international money transfer services in Nigeria. It is, however, important to emphasise that a prospective player shall first obtain the requisite licence to operate in Nigeria as an IMTO”.
“The CBN wishes to advise Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to beware of the unwholesome activities of some unlicensed IMTOs in Nigeria. This warning has become necessary because of the activities of some unregistered IMTOs, whose modes of operation are detrimental to the Nigerian economy,” Okorafor said.

Boko Haram ready for peace’

By on 19:14
Hajiya Aisha Wakil, who is believed to be close to the Boko Haram leadership, says the group is ready for talks with the Federal Government on the fate of the 219 missing Chibok girls.
She said yesterday that she had been on the neck of the Boko Haram leaders, who according to her offered to honour her to dialogue with the government and release the girls and other captives.
The group’s leadership might soon make a pronouncement on their plan for the girls, she said.
Hajiya Aisha, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone, said she expected the Boko Haram leaders to come out and discuss with the government.
She said: “Since I came back, I have been on their neck. They have now agreed to come out and discuss with the government and bring back the girls.

“I am for the Chibok girls and all the captives. They are ready for peace. This is what they told me.”
Although Hajiya Aisha was not forthcoming on the imminent release of the girls, whose abduction has sparked a global outrage, she said: “I think they might post some information on YouTube within 24 hours.”
The Army on August 14 declared Hajiya Aisha and two others wanted  for interrogation in line with the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 (as amended).
The others are a journalist, Ahmed Salkida, and Amb. Ahmed  Umar Bolori.
But Aisha has maintained her innocence, claiming  that she is not a shady personality.

In a reaction to the Army’s statement, she had said: “I am Aisha Alkali Wakil. I understand that  the military declared me,  Ahmed Silkida and  Ahmed Bolori wanted for having links with Boko Haram. It’s interesting; now they believe me?
“I know the Boko Haram boys. I have been in front fighting for peace long before Chibok girls were kidnapped. Nigerian security knows me too well. I’m not shady. Why declaring me wanted?
“I have had meetings with Chief of Army Staff and his people. I told them the way forward, to allow me come with some commanders of Boko Haram and  discuss with them,  present the release of CBGs but they chose to do things their own ways only and never gave considerations to any of my suggestions.
“I  want to inform the Nigerian people of my innocence and make them realise that I am in constant relation with the security personnel and they know where to find me but wonder why I had to be declared wanted on national news, even mentioning my husband’s name alongside.

This has put my immediate and extended family under a lot of pressure and I do not deserve this from the Nigerian government.
“Though they may not appreciate all my efforts to proffer peaceful solutions to the menace of Boko Haram, my name should not be mudslinged nor my character defamed. Thank you.”
President Muhammadu Buhari,  in an interview with reporters on the sideline of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) in Nairobi, Kenya last weekend, said the government was ready to dialogue with bonafide leaders of the group who know the whereabouts of the girls.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying: ‘‘I have made a couple of comments on the Chibok girls and it seems to me that much of it has been politicized.
‘‘What we said is that the government which I preside over is prepared to talk to bonafide leaders of Boko Haram.‘If they do not want to talk to us directly, let them pick an internationally recognized Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), convince them that they are holding the girls and that they want Nigeria to release a number of Boko Haram leaders in detention, which they are supposed to know.
‘‘If they do it through the ‘modified leadership’ of Boko Haram and they talk with an internationally recognized NGO, then Nigeria will be prepared to discuss for their release.”

Spain imports N1.38tr products from Nigeria’

By on 19:02
The  Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Embassy of Spain in Nigeria, Mr Pablo Segrelles, yesterday said his country imported products valued at N1.38trillion(4 billion Euros) from Nigeria last yaer.
He, however, said this year’s economic situation in Nigeria would adversely affect his country’s importation of oil, gas and other products from Nigeria.
“Until this year, the volume of trade between Nigeria and Spain was much larger than most people are aware of.
“In 2015, Spain imported more than 4 billion Euros worth of products from Nigeria. But, this would be less this year because of the fall in prices of oil and the current economic situation.
“Even at this time of the year, Spain has not imported up to 300 million Euros worth of products from Nigeria,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
According to him, Nigeria’s current economic situation is really unfavorable for trade and business transactions between the two countries.
Segrelles also said more Spanish companies that had indicated trade and investment interest in Nigeria were being discouraged by the current challenge of foreign exchange.
The envoy also expressed optimism that there was the tendency for more Spanish companies to engage in long-term trade and investment with Nigeria, for the future.
“The current economic situation in Nigeria is reducing Spanish exports into Nigeria.
“But I think that in the long-run, there would be a lot of Spanish companies that would do business or invest in Nigeria on long-term basis.
“We hope that in the long-run, Nigeria’s current economic situation would recover,’’ he added.

The government of Kwara State yesterday said a new salary structure would be introduced for council workers next month.
Commissioner for Local Governments, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development Haruna Muhammad addressed reporters in Ilorin, the state capital.
Muhammad said the salary structure would follow recommendations of the verification panel and that the outcome of the report will determine the policy direction on council administration.
“The panel submitted its report and it is due for consideration. The government would have loved to start the implementation in July but for time constraints.
“What determines our salary is the inflow from the federation account. By September, we will start a new salary regime to reflect our findings,” the commissioner said.

On backlog of council  salaries, Mohammed said the problem would be resolved when the economy improved.
He described the state’s Joint Allocation Account noting that it accommodated stakeholders from government and labour unions.

Nigeria can overtake India in digital technology, says Osinbajo

By on 18:57

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday said the country could overtake India in the technology and innovation talent market.
He spoke during the flag-off ceremony of Google Digital Training for Youth Empowerment at the State House, Abuja.
According to him, the administration will continue to explore creative ways at empowering the youths.
He said: “We intend to create a reservoir of human capacity in technology that can be exported internationally. Nigeria can lead India as a market for technology and innovation talent.
“This year, we are establishing technology hubs across the country, two super hubs in Lagos and Abuja and six regional hubs in the six geo-political zones. In partnership with several major technology companies, the hubs will be fully resourced with infrastructure and capacity building tools.

“Each hub will be designed to produce relevant innovative technology solutions to a wide range of business, commercial and government problems. For example, alternative energy solutions, creative technology, public services delivery in health, education and government processes, import substitution and others.
“Several major technology companies are partnering with us in the provision of infrastructure and opportunity in the hubs. Also starting this year, we have budgeted for the training of 65,000 young Nigerias in hardware and software services and more sophisticated software and hardware such as animation.
“This would mean that we would be building more local capacity to build, assemble hardware and write innovative programmes; we will also be focusing on technology for media and entertainment.”
While the empowerment initiative is targeting 400,000 youths at a start, Osinbajo said the government is determined to give every opportunity to younger generation to ensure they excel through the use of modern technology.

He said a special initiative on innovative technology and start-ups’  presentation of prospective participants have already been done in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
“This Friday, 30 of the best start up ideas will be exhibiting their inovations at the Presidential villa at the first Annual Aso Villa Demo Day.
“The 30 winners will be arriving here in Abuja today and they will participate in an innovation growth camp for the next two days.
“And this is why what Google has offered to do in collaboration with the Federal Government, the Google training for youth employment, the training of 400,000 young people is a monumental contribution to the national plan and in particular to economic development.
“Everyone of the 400,000 young men and women to be trained is a potential creator of Facebook, Uber, Jobberman, Iroko Tv or something that we haven’t even imagined yet. The exciting prospect of this training is that it unleashes the creativity,  innovation and the boundless imaginative of the most productive segment of our society, the youths.

“For any student today, I think that we must appreciate that this is the age of multi-tasking; you cannot just be an economist, an accountant, a lawyer or a graduate of international relations, or mass communication or performing arts and just remain that way. Multi-skilling is crucial today, multi-tasking is the order of the day; you can’t just be one thing.
“You must learn to be a man of affairs, a versatile operator not a mono skill graduate.”
To achieve this, he said there are many opportunities as practically anything can be learned online today.
“All of these business reviews and business journals, many of them are free online. Everyone has a right to be rich; age is not a barrier to great wealth as we have seen from all the examples of great men and women who have done so many incredible things,” the Vice President said.
According to him, there are also important opportunities for those in the performing and film arts, which goes beyond actual performing to effective management of talents, their programmes and projects.
